Let Go to Grow: The Power of Aligning Your Clients with Your Vision
Hey ladies,
I'm back! Something happened today that I feel is crucial to share. Even though people may come to us wanting to give us money to work with them, we don't have to say yes if they don't align with our bigger vision.
A lot of business owners, especially when starting out or scaling, tend to say yes to everyone. I've seen it repeatedly, and I've been guilty of it too. The excitement of getting clients can cloud our judgment. However, saying yes to a client who isn't your ideal match sets both you and them up for failure.
Recently, I decided to work with someone who didn't fit our ideal client profile at Sales Mama. The major reason was that he was a man, and our brand predominantly focuses on women. Despite my reservations, I gave it a shot and agreed to a 30-day trial. But after the trial, I just wasn't feeling it. I brought this up with my team and appreciated the candid conversation we had.
We concluded that Bob (not his real name) didn't fit our vision for Sales Mama. I realized I was holding on to Bob not because he was a good fit but because I thought I was doing my team a favor. However, this wasn't true. By focusing our energy on clients who align with our vision, we can achieve greater success in the long run.
Letting go of things that don't serve you creates space for those that do. This principle applies to business, relationships, and all areas of life. Goodbyes are fucking hard, especially for someone as loyal as I am.
I work with a spiritual life coach who helps me with energy work and understanding my tendencies, and we recently discussed how my difficulty with goodbyes - rooted in chaotic childhood experiences - manifests in my business.
When my parents divorced, it was chaotic. My mom showed up at school one day and moved my sister and I from Iowa to Minnesota that day, without telling my dad. This trauma led me to associate goodbyes with chaos. In my business, I realized I would rather mess up and be fired than make a clean break. This is a self-sabotage pattern dating back to when I was ten years old!
If you don’t heal these patterns, they can appear in your life and business. Reflect on your clients: are you holding onto anyone who isn’t your ideal match? It’s scary to let go, especially when cash flow is tight. But letting go creates space for the right people. With the right systems, strategy, and support, these people will come, making your business journey easier and way more fun!
Remember, entrepreneurship is hard, but you don’t have to do it alone. Welcome to the Sales Mama community. I'm thrilled you're here, and I can’t wait to help you build a badass business.
