Golden Handcuffs
Today, I want to talk about something key when it comes to selling: the misconception that some things are common knowledge when they are, in fact, not.
Let me share a personal story. It's Monday morning, and I'm in my office reflecting on my youngest daughter's birthday weekend. We escaped the 104-degree heat by heading to the coast, where it was a cool 65 degrees. It was a beautiful day, but now we're back to the heat and smoke.
Over the weekend, I had a reading. I'm really into spirituality, mediumship, hypnotherapy, and card readings. During the reading, the first card that came up was a peacock, symbolizing standing out and shining brightly. But it was upside down, meaning I wasn't living up to that. It was a wake-up call because I often tell others to shine, yet I wasn't fully doing it myself.
We discussed the concept of "Golden Handcuffs" – being held back by things that seem beneficial but aren't aligned with our true selves. I realized that I was holding on to consulting roles that no longer served me. It hit me hard because I was telling others to break free while still being shackled myself.
This reminded me of a past podcast about "Big Juicy No’s" – the significant things we need to say no to in order to make room for growth. It's not the easy no's but the tough ones that feel like a loss. For instance, the medium I spoke to had to sell her beloved grand piano to move forward. It was a painful process, but necessary.
Reflecting on my journey, I look back at leaving Iowa, selling my house, and parting with my horses. It was heartbreaking, but I knew it was essential for my growth. Similarly, the consulting roles I held onto were my golden handcuffs. They paid well, but they weren't where my heart was.
So, where in your life are you allowing golden handcuffs to keep you playing small? What big, juicy no do you need to embrace? It doesn't have to make you cry, but it should be significant enough to feel challenging.
For me, it's about fully shining my light and being true to myself. And yes, it can be tough. Entrepreneurship and personal growth are hard, but necessary. Every level brings new challenges, and we need to embrace them.
If you're feeling stuck, I encourage you to do some personal development. Dive deeper into self-awareness, hire a coach, or explore resources like Byron Katie's, The Work. It's about taking control of your thoughts and emotions and reclaiming your power.
Let's break free from those golden handcuffs and shine our peacock feathers proudly. Even if it means taking small steps, step fully into your light. Remember, it's about leading by example. If I want my kids to see me as a badass, I need to walk the talk.
Let's get after it. We have lives to change, money to make, and work to do.
