Turning Overwhelm into Opportunity: How to Handle Sales Tasks as a Busy Mom
Today, we’re diving into a topic that’s all too familiar: overwhelm. If you’re anything like me, you’ve been there—possibly even this week! But here’s the twist: instead of letting overwhelm get the best of us, we’re going to learn how to turn it into opportunities for growth. Let me share some real-life examples, because I’ve been in the thick of it this week, and I know you can relate.
Recognizing the Overwhelm
Let’s start with the obvious: I’m overwhelmed. This week has been a perfect storm of challenges—poor planning on my part, a lack of help due to unforeseen circumstances, and multiple projects launching at once. Normally, I might have let this kind of stress shut me down. But instead of succumbing to old habits like yelling, getting angry, or even picking at my face (yes, it’s a weird habit, but we all have our quirks), I’m choosing to see this as an opportunity.
The first step in this process is self-awareness. I realized that the way I was feeling wasn’t how I wanted to show up in my business or in my life. This led me to ask the critical question: What is the opportunity for growth here? Recognizing that my overwhelm was a result of not setting myself up for success, I started to look at the situation from a troubleshooting standpoint.
Here’s the deal: each time we slip into that overwhelmed state, it’s a signal that something needs to change. Rather than letting it spiral out of control, I decided to step back and evaluate what was causing this feeling and how I could prevent it in the future.
Troubleshooting the Chaos
This week, everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. From my house turning into a "zombie apocalypse" due to lack of help, to my website crashing during a launch, it was one thing after another. But here’s the thing: instead of letting this chaos defeat me, I embraced it as a part of the journey. When life feels like it's punching you in the face, day after day, the key is to keep showing up with grit and determination.
I had to remind myself that these are all first-world problems. Sure, the power going out while recording this podcast was inconvenient, but we still have a roof over our heads, food in our bellies, and so much to be grateful for. Taking a step back to laugh at the absurdity of it all helped me regain perspective.
Now, let’s talk about how to avoid this kind of overwhelm in the future. It starts with identifying the triggers—what causes you to feel stressed, anxious, or burnt out? For me, it was a combination of poor planning and not having the right support systems in place. Moving forward, I’m focusing on reverse-engineering my life to minimize these stressors.
One crucial aspect of this process is avoiding the insanity of doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results. If something isn’t working, it’s time to change tactics. This might mean saying no to certain clients or projects that don’t align with your energy or priorities.
One of the biggest challenges for high-achievers is learning to relax. Even on vacation, I struggle with slowing down—there’s always so much to do! But I’ve learned that rest and relaxation are essential for recharging our batteries. Without it, we run on empty, and that’s when overwhelm really takes hold.
The concept of “slowing down to speed up” is something I’m still working on, but it’s incredibly powerful. By conditioning ourselves to minimize stress and anxiety incrementally, we create space for more positive, fulfilling activities in our lives.
Surrounding Yourself with the Right Energy
Lastly, be mindful of the people you surround yourself with. If certain clients, colleagues, or even friends drain your energy, it’s time to reevaluate those relationships. Aim to attract more "hell yes" energy into your life—the kind of people who lift you up and excite you about your work.
In conclusion, overwhelm doesn’t have to be a negative force in your life. With self-awareness, a mindset shift, and a focus on setting yourself up for success, you can turn those overwhelming moments into incredible opportunities for growth. And remember, laughter really is the best medicine, especially when life feels like it’s throwing everything at you. Keep showing up, stay resilient, and you’ll come out stronger on the other side.
